Life As Ceremony is an independent journal and a labor of love by Alice Baca. This volume gathers voices, stories, and visual expressions from Indigenous, Afro-descendant, 2SLGBTQIA+, and other communities that have been silenced or unseen—a space of reverence, collaboration, and living memory.
Rendered in ink on paper, my illustration “Here, we meet,” explores connection and universality through intersecting bodies, rippling water, and cosmic roots. Each figure embodies androgyny, not as an absence, but as a fullness, a freedom to simply be. Among them blooms Guarianthe skinneri, Costa Rica’s national flower: an orchid of paradoxical beauty, both strong and delicate, virile and feminine. Nearby, a hummingbird hovers—sacred to many Indigenous peoples of the Americas—embodying love, agility, joy, and the spiritual balance between motion and stillness.
